SUP is one of those water sports activities where everyone can join in, whether it's for intense training or a leisurely Sunday paddle to enjoy the surroundings. Especially the latter is one of the reasons why inflatable SUP boards have become so popular, as they are the most all-round type of boards. This means they suit all ages and skill levels.
Moreover, they are incredibly easy to handle, as the entire board and all the equipment can fit into one bag, which can easily be transported to the nearest open water. Super smart, easy to use, and makes the whole experience much more flexible. However, it's essential to take good care of your board, as otherwise, it will quickly become difficult to use.
Why it's important to maintain your paddleboard
Although our inflatable SUP boards are very durable, proper care significantly extends their lifespan. Here are 3 good reasons to maintain your board, so you don't have to replace it every season:
- Avoid holes and leaks: If you dry the board in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt, the heat can cause the seams to loosen, which can eventually lead to leaks.
- Avoid bad odors: If you pack the board away without rinsing it, remnants of algae and dirt will quickly start to rot and create a strong smell in the bag.
- Prevent damage from algae growth: Especially after trips in lakes and brackish water, algae can get stuck. Always clean the board, as algae growth and dirt can eventually weaken and permanently damage the seams.
A few simple maintenance habits can save you from having to buy a new SUP board next year.
How to best maintain your paddleboard
Maintaining inflatable paddleboards doesn't require much time.
With just 3 small steps, you can avoid costly problems and significantly extend the lifespan.
Here are our 3 most important maintenance tips:
1. Rinse the board clean. Always make sure to remove sand, small stones, and saltwater after use. Even tiny, sharp objects can cause annoying damage when the board is packed away.
2. Deflate the board. Roll the board tightly from the nose towards the valve, pressing out the air with each fold. This prevents excess air from pressing against the seams.
3. Secure and check the valve. Use your tight-strap to keep the board together, so it doesn't slide around in the bag. Also, remember to regularly tighten the valve on the board with the tool from the repair kit, so no air leaks out.

How to patch your paddleboard
If the worst happens and a small hole appears, you can fortunately easily patch your inflatable SUP board at home with the repair kit that comes with all our paddleboards. With these simple steps, you'll have it patched in no time:
- Find the hole. Inflate the board with the pump or electric pump, and apply soapy water to the surface, watching for where it bubbles, as that's where the hole is.
- Clean the area. Deflate the board again and thoroughly dry the area so it's free of dirt and grease around the hole.
- Apply vinyl glue and patch. Cut a matching patch, apply vinyl glue to the wet board and the patch, and press it firmly and evenly over the hole.
- Let it dry. Place something heavy in pressure over the patch and let the glue cure for at least 24 hours before inflating the board and taking it back on the water.
Missing a repair kit? It's good that we sell them separately here at Watery. The kit below works on all inflatable SUP boards.

Proper cleaning ensures a healthy board
SUP boards are generally incredibly durable, but if their care is neglected, their condition will quickly deteriorate. But with the right care, they last for many years.
- Rinse the SUP board in cold fresh water. This removes chlorine, salt, and algae deposits that would otherwise degrade the SUP board's material over time.
- Use a mild scouring sponge. This way, you remove everything among the deposits on the paddleboard.
- Don't use soap but Rodalon. Soap can dissolve glue and seams, eventually creating holes in the board.
- Let the board dry completely before storage. Moisture can create mold on the SUP board and create holes in the material.
As a rule, it's okay to pack all the equipment together after coming ashore without following these tips. It's just important to go through the maintenance procedure when you get home.
Care of your accessories
All the accessories we offer at Watery also last longer when properly cared for.
- Removable tri-fin. Just remember to remove it before folding the board - otherwise, you risk it breaking.
-
SUP leash. Remember to rinse it thoroughly and dry it with a towel.
- Paddle. Make sure to rinse it clean if you've been out in saltwater.
From here, there's not much more to it than spending a little extra time taking care of your SUP board and the equipment that comes with it. It's well worth it in the long run.

If you do, dirt and algae residues will rapidly start to rot while it's packed. Is it okay to use soap when washing my paddleboard?
